(Sir) William Nicholson - High Barn, Rottingdean
signed 'Nicholson' (lower left) and inscribed 'High Barn/Rottingdean' (on a label attached to the reverse)
oil on board
13¼ x 16¼ in. (33.6 x 41.3 cm.)
Painted circa 1922.
1872-1949.
This interesting study in form with its restricted palette would seem to date from Nicholson's second visit to Rottingdean in Sussex. Between the autumn of 1920 and the spring of 1923 he was living at North End House, Rottingdean, the former house of the artist Burne-Jones. High Barn, also known as Height Barn, was an isolated group of farm buildings on the downs, part of Balsdean Farm, to the east of the village.
We are very grateful to Patricia Reed for her help in preparing this catalogue entry.
