Cross Bones cemetery
Long before my normal period, but this long forgotten cemetery with an unusual history is so amazing. For centuries Cross Bones was a burial site for outcasts. The bodies of 15,000 paupers and prostitutes are believed to have been buried here before it was closed more than 150 years ago.

Daniel Maclise - Snap-Apple Night
1833
It was inspired by a Halloween party he attended in Blarney, Ireland, in 1832. The caption in the first exhibit catalogue:
There Peggy was dancing with Dan
While Maureen the lead was melting,
To prove how their fortunes ran
With the Cards could Nancy dealt in;
There was Kate, and her sweet-heart Will,
In nuts their true-love burning,
And poor Norah, though smiling still
She'd missed the snap-apple turning.
On the Festival of Hallow Eve.

Thomas Miles Richardson, Jun - A view of Kilchurn Castle, Loch Awe, Argyll

Robert Herdman - Portrait of Thomas Carlyle, half-length, seated
Price Realized £4,830
signed with monogram (centre left) and inscribed and dated 'Chelsea/22 Ap. 1875' (lower right)
pencil, black and red chalk, heightened with white, on buff paper
13.5/8 x 9.5/8 in. (34.7 x 24.5 cm.)
The present drawing is a preliminary study for the oil painting in the National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh. Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) was one of the greatest men of letters of the 19th century. Born in Dumfriesshire, he entered Edinburgh University at the age of 15 and thereafter contributed reviews on German literature to various Scottish publications. He moved to Cheyne Row, Chelsea in 1834 and published his celebrated work on the French Revolution in 1837.
Lectures On Heroes, Hero Worship and the Heroic in History followed in 1841, with publications on Chartism and the future of labour, Past and Present, appearing almost simultaneously. Further major works, Oliver Cromwell's Letter and Speeches, The Life of John Sterling and A History of Frederick the Great followed in 1845, 1851 and 1865. Several volumes of Carlyle's correspondence were published postumously.

Edward Atkinson Hornel - Sweet Blossom
Edward Atkinson Hornel was a landscape, genre and decorative painter who worked in oils. Hornel was born in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria, Australia on 11th July, 1864 to Scottish parents. The Hornel family then moved to Kirkcudbright, Scotland where Edward spent his childhood. Between 1881 and 1883 he studied art at the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh and continued his training under Verlat in Antwerp. The works of the early period show a strong Belgian influence; mostly landscapes with figures in the manner of Maris or Mauve. However, through his long friendship with George Henry, Hornel moved to a more colourful, decorative style. Indeed their ten-year long association produced a series of pictures that are regarded as the essence of the Glasgow School. Using low-keyed palettes, Henry and Hornel tried to escape subject and local colour, concentrating on purely decorative colour arrangements. Edward Atkinson Hornel was deeply influenced by Japanese art, this was inspired by a trip to Japan, 1893 to 1894. Hornel also visited Ceylon and Australia in 1907 and Burma, Canada and America between 1920-1921. Hornel exhibited for the first time in 1883 at the Edinburgh Exhibition. He became a member of the International Society of Painters and Engravers and an associate member of the New Gallery. In 1901 Hornel was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy but declined the honour.
Hornel lived for many years in Kirkcudbright where he died on 30th June 1933.

A slightly larger watercolour entitled Highland Hospitality was exhibited by Lewis at the Old Watercolour Society in 1832 and is now in the collection at the Yale Center for British Art (see J. Baynard, Works of Splendour and Imagination; The Exhibition Watercolour, 1981, Yale Exhibition Catalogue no. 79, illustrated).
