David Cox

Painter of English and Welsh landscapes, coastal scenes and rustic genre scenes in watercolour or oils. Born in Birmingham, the son of a whitesmith and worker in small iron wares. Learnt in an evening painting school and then apprenticed to a Minaturist. Worked as a scene painter and went to London in 1804 and after marrying in 1808 settled in Dulwich and took up painting and teaching. His works were very popular but his pupils paintings were often sold under his name, with a fake signature.
