Edmund John Niemann - Anglers

Painter of landscapes, angling subjects and marine pictures. Born in Islington (father was German). Employed first at Lloyds but after 1839 became a full time artist and settled at High Wycombe. Exhibited at the RA and elsewhere. He returned to London in 1848 for the foundation of the 'Free Exhibition' held in the Chinese Gallery at Hyde Park Corner (later became the Portland Gallery, Regent St., of which he became Secretary. His paintings were often very large. Often depict the Thames and the area of the Swale near Richmond, Yorkshire. His son, Edward painted in a very similar style.
