John William North - Introduction

1842 - 1924.
Landsscape painter, genre, illustrator and wood engraver. Born at Walham Green, studied at the Marlborough School of Art and was apprenticed as a wood engraver in 1860. 1862 -6 employed by the Dalziel Brothers and illustrated for such magazines as Good Words, Sunday Magazine etc. Exhibited at the RA and elsewhere and from 1868 lived in Somerset. Travelled to Algiers and as can be seen in the above painting of his house in Tripoli, he was very interested in the effects of light. He preferred landscape to figures generally and sometimes his friend F. Walker (another painter) added them for him.
