Charles West Cope

1811 - 1890.
Painter of historical, literary and biblical subjects. Also an illustrator and engraver. Studied at Mr Suss's Art School in Bloomsbury and became a student at the RA in 1828. In 1831 he first went to Paris ans studied the Venetian pictures in the Louvre. He exhibited at the RA. In 1833 -5 he travelled in Italy. He was a popular painter and is best known for his small cabinet pictures of mothers and children. He retired in 1883. There was a large sale of his works at Christie's in 1969 sold by one of his grand-daughters.
