William Huggins - Cattle Watering

A Liverpool animal and landscape painter. Studied at the Mechanics Institute where he won a prize at 15. He loved animals, had a house full of pets and studied at the Zoo. He exhibited at the RA (1842 - 75) and elsewhere and painted a number of historical subjects featuring animals. His paintings used a technique of pale, transparent colours over a white ground. In 1861 he moved to Chester and in 1876 took a house at Bettws-y-Coed in Wales though he later returned to Chester where he died. Two of his sisters and a brother also painted.
