George William Mote

[Children playing by a stream] 1865
oil on canvas
.
1832 - 1909.
Landscape painter. Self-taught. His early pictures are of Middle Hill House in Worcestershire where he worked for Sir Thomas Phillips (a famous manuscript collector) as a gardener and caretaker. He often painted landscapes through an open window. He exhibited at the RA (1857 - 73) and by then was a full time artist. Many of his views are of Surrey, Sussex and Wales. After 1877 his work seems to have declined and he stopped exhibiting.
