(Sir) William Fettes Douglas - The Alchemist

1822-1891.
Fettes Douglas worked in Edinburgh as a bank clerk. His interest in alchemy and astrology influenced his choice of subject-matters. Appointed director of the National Gallery of Scotland in 1877 and five years later became president of the Royal Scottish Academy.

Wow, great idea for a blog! I just found it. I find it refreshing that you "confess" it's not the usual personal blog. In any case, I've enlarged this painting here and am enamored with the details -- the fabrics, the stuff all over the floor, and especially the carvings on the table. I wonder, if that table were to show up today on Antiques Roadshow, how much would it be worth?
