Henry Roderick Newman

1843 - 1917.
Born near New York where he at first studied medicine but after the death of his father turned to painting and first exhibited (in the US) in 1861. But in 1870 he travelled to France, then to Florence and later Venice but in 1883 married an Englishwoman (Mary Wills) and at first they remained in Florence and numbered amongst their friends Robert Browning and Henry James. He travelled a lot particularly studying architecture and archaeology and most winters from 1887 to 1892 were spent in Egypt and neighbouring countries. In 1893 he went to Athens and in the 1890's Japan.
This watercolour was painted in 1890 at Ramleh (now Ramallah) just north of Jerusalem.
