John Simmons - In the Wood

1861
Watercolour heightened with white and gum arabic

Simmons is still little known. He painted in watercolour and in the 1860's and early 1870's painted a number of fantasy subjects often showing fairies or mythical beasts in woodland settings. Sometimes these are related to Shakespeare, sometimes to no known literary subject.
