William Alexander - The Young Master

fl. 1878 - 1898
Alexander was mainly a landscape painter who lived in Salisbury but though he exhibited at the RA his life is virtually unknown. This is one of his watercolours and the details are very well done. Notice what i presume is the artists portfolio leaning against the chair. The boy is dressed in tartan, probably not because he was Scottish but because it was fashionable for children about this time. It was set by Prince Albert and the young Prince of Wales who were illustrated in Highland dress whilst Balmoral was being re-modelled in the mid-1850's. Not shown here but the outfit was often accompanied by a huge feathered hat.
