One of the leading artists of his day Pickersgill has been somewhat forgotten today.
He began his career by wining first prize in the competition for cartoons for
Westminster Hall. He went on to become a highly successful painter of historical,
biblical and genre subjects as well as mural designer and illustrator. Some of his
work shows an influence of William Holman Hunt although his principal influence
was William Etty. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1857. His painting Death of
Harold was purchased for the Nation in 1847.
