The following quotation is taken from the Kentish Gazette:

'...one of the most successful efforts ever attempted by the author...in the foreground are four cows standing in a pool, whilst a fifth is on the bank and close to an old tree trunk. The whole composition including the drawing, grouping, painting, and surroundings, is exquisite and such are its merits that it would be impossible to detail them in a meagre sketch like the present. In the meadow behind are three other cows enveloped in a light mist which has the double effect of bringing out the colours of those to the front and lending to the whole piece the appearance of a vertable summer's sunny evening...'

Probably London, Royal Academy, 1879, no. 257.
