Of all the paintings by Dora Carrington, an artist remembered more for her platonic lifetime relationship with Lytton Strachey than for her underrated quality of portraiture, this picture of a farmer's wife she met on holiday in Cornwall to me is more evocative than her ones of more famous people such as Gerald Brenan, E.M Forster and Mark Gertier.
