I agree with Paxman. Victorian paintings have become unfashionable not least because they achieve technical competency, something that today's 'artists' spurn. In a world where Picasso is the highest selling artist what chance a new Frith?
It is some consolation that when one visits the Queens Royal collection there are Victorian paintings in abundance, Frith included.
I noted one other poignant passage in Paxmans history lesson. "As immigrants poured in, the population doubled in 30 years and great stinking slums spread out"
