Thomas Armstrong - The Hay Field



c. 1917

1832 - 1911.
Manchester decorative figure painter, who studied under Ary Scheffer in Paris. Exhibited at the RA 1865 - 77. In 1881 he was appointed Director of Art at the South Kensington Museum and more or less gave up painting.

    Hi - I found a nice oil of an old Native American man at the flea market today. The portrait looks like a Hopi maybe Navajo. It's signed Thomas Armstrong Smith. It's painted on burlap. Do you have any info on this painting?

    Is Thomas Armstrong Smith an American Artist?
    Would an attached picture help in Identifing the painting? The reason I'm asking s because the "The Hay Field" painting has the same burlap background like the painting I found.

    Thank you but I think you are confusing two artists. Thomas Armstrong as featured here was a British artist who as far as I know never went to the States. I'm sorry I know virtually nothing about American artists.

    Hello Hermes, Thomas Armstrong was closely related to my maternal grandmother. I'd never managed to see more than one reproduction of any of his paintings, so was delighted to find your blog. Thank you!
    I think I can see why he gave up painting ...
