George Cole

(not to be confused with his son George Vicat Cole)
Portrait, landscape and animal painter. Self-taught and began his career painting large advertisements for a travelling circus. He then went to Holland to study the Dutch Masters and back in Portsmouth concentrated on animal paintings. Exhibited at the RA from 1849 and started to paint landscapes mainly in Hampshire, Surrey, Cornwall, Wales and Sussex.
