Simeon Solomon - A Young Musician

[Sotherbys 11 Nov 1998]

[A Young Musician employed in the Temple Service durumg the feast of Tabernacles, later xalled Hosanna]

Rediscovered for the first time since its last known exhibition at the RA Winter Exhibition in 1906 - the year after his death (it was first exhibited at the RA in 1861). Solomon was brought up in the East End London Jewish community (still very much a part of London life when I was a child). This painting was regarded as an important painting of his and was bought by the Leeds stockbroker Thomas Edward Plint (a collector of Pre Raphaelite works) and later in 1862 by the picture dealer Ernest Gambart.
