Charles Edward Wilson - The Picnic

Watercolour.
Wilson lived in Godalming in Sussex from 1896 (bor in Whiwell, Nottinghamshire in 1854) and had studied at the Sheffield School of Art. He went to work in Paris for a time on the Journal L'Art. At one time he shared a cottage with Carlton Alfred Smith and their styles are not always easy to tell apart. He exhibited at a number of major galleries, including the Walker Gallery in Liverpool from 1891 and exhibited over 100 pictures at the RA. He had to give up painting in 1926 from poor eyesight though after an operation this seems to have improved ten years later - unfortunately the year of his death in Addiscombe, Surrey.
