Painted in March 1911 when Narcissi were blooming. It was first owned by the Victorian engineer Sir John Aird who was an important patron of the artist.

A famous picture of the artist and when first exhibited at the RA was voted 'Picture of the Year' by readers of the Pall Mall Gazette. It shows the disrobing room of an ancient Roman baths. Notice the niches for the clothes in the top right. His painting of the marble, sense of depth and use of light were much praised.

The model for the older woman was the artist's Mother-in-Law, Madame Grissin-Dumoulin. and the younger woman was his first wife, Pauline.
The painting was commissioned by Messrs Ernest Gambart, London in 1865
