Charles Rossiter - Sad Memories

1854
oil on canvas
exhibited at the RA in the same year.
Showing a young seamstress reading a letter reminding her of her past life and family. Her dress suggests she is mourning a father or husband. Inspired (as were many other similar paintings) by Thomas Hood's The Song of the Shirt.
Rossiter did an even darker version of this subject as an etching in 1858, and in 1859 a painting entitled 'Work-Work-Work' on the same theme.
