It's a frustrating painting this one because it could have been brilliant if it had used the same subject but without sentimentality.

I know what you mean but our views on sentimentality have changed since then. At the time it was considered very acceptable particularly towards children, a la Dickens. When so many children died young perhaps it is more understandable.
