John Atkinson Grimshaw - Near Lake Windermere, the Lake District, Cumbria

1865
oil on board
15.5 x 20"
Showing Grimshaw's early Pre-Raphaelite sympathies with subtle use of colours to show the early evening skies.
He had no formal training as a painter, and his family - strict Baptists -didn't want him to paint. He seems to have learnt by observing contemporary artists in local galleries and dealers.
