Lawrence Alma-Tadema - A Family Group
1896
Oil on panel, 305 X 279 mm
Alma-Tadema met his second wife Laura Epps when she was a student of Ford Madox-Brown. Here she sits to the right of her brother and sisters who admire the diptych that she and her husband painted to commemorate their marriage in 1871. A self-portrait of Alma-Tadema at work is reflected in the mirror behind the sitters.
Alma-Tadema was born in Holland and to celebrate his and his wife’s different nationalities decorated the diptych doors with English roses and Dutch tulips. This picture was painted in 1896 and given to Laura as a present on their silver wedding anniversary.
