Charles Hazelwood Shannon - Brown and Silver
Price Realized £6,573
signed and inscribed 'Brown and Silver:/by C.H. SHANNON/...A' (on the reverse)
oil on canvas
12¾ x 12¾ in. (32.4 x 32.4 cm.)
The picture is sometimes described as a study for Rose and Blanche, but this is almost certainly not the case. The two works are of about the same date (c. 1899) and Brown and Silver, like Rose and Blanche, shows figures in Van Dyck costume, but they are essentially independent productions. At most they might be described as variations on a theme.
Judge Evans was an important patron of Shannon's, although our picture of his collecting activity remains sketchy. He also owned Alphonse Legros' portrait of John Gray, dated 1883, in the Tate Gallery, presenting it in 1907.
We are grateful to Dr Michael Barclay for his help in preparing this entry.
