I had my first baby in a London hospital (St Marys Praed St) in 1972. The health care part of the stay was fine, but the facilities in 1972 were squashier and darker than your 1910s photo. The ward in the photo looks spacious, light and airy. I wonder if progress is always linear.

My Mother worked a Nurse during the war in Bedford, she says the care was often better though the medical techniques are infinitely better. In the Alzh ward some of the old people had their legs broken to test new drugs for the troops.
