since about Victorian times (roughly 1837 on)
The film, if not the music, makes The Gorbals look like a normal part of town. I am surprised. Everything I "know" about the area comes from my old boss, a man who said he grew up in dire poverty, darkness & hunger in the Gorbals. Even if he was exaggerating about the narrow, seedy lanes, he really DID get taken out of primary school as quickly as possible and sent out to work.Or perhaps I misunderstood his stories, because of the accent.
I had a boss who had lived there and said it wasn't too bad. I've said before my Mother comes from Bethnal Green considered a slum by many.
