Mark Lancelot Symons - Molly in the Garden, 1930
English, 1887–1935). Molly in the Garden, 1930. Oil on panel, 21.5 x 14.5 in. Harris Museum & Art Gallery, Preston, U.K.
Museum text: “Molly is one of the artist’s three daughters. Symons was a devout Catholic and his paintings of gardens often contain religious symbolism. He saw them as places of sanctuary and peace like churches. Here, Molly sits in a rubble-strewn garden where flowers still manage to push their way through. Symons may be illustrating how she is flourishing despite some family problems.”

Dr. Grace Hopper
Dr. Grace Hopper works on a manual tape punch computer on August 5, 1944 — decades before she’d earn the title Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy, be named Grandma COBOL and Amazing Grace, and receive a Google doodle in honor of her birthday (December 9, 1906).
