Frederic Leighton (studio) - Lady Sybil Primrose
This was sold by Christie's in 1996. It seems to be a smaller version of the painting by Leighton which was exhibited in 1885. The original is the same pose but rather different. I love her name.

Thomas Faed (1826 - 1900) was the son of a millwright and the brother of John Faed. He specialised in painting Scottish peasant life. He was very popular in his day and his pictures commanded high prices, but went blind in the last seven years of his life.

Arthur Hughes - The Long Engagement
[The Long Engagement] 1853-55 Birmingham Museums & Art Gallery
[Fair Rosamund] 1854 National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne
1832 - 1915.
One of the most talented of the Pre Raphaelite influenced painters, though his skill at painting seems to have declined after about 1870, though he still produced some wonderful illustrations. Of Welsh parentage, his ruddy cheeks earnt him the nickname 'Cherry'. Rossetti said of all his male friends, Hughes was the sweetest and had the most ingenuous nature, the least carking and querulous, and the freest from envy, hatred and malice, and all uncharitableness.
The Babylonian Marriage Market - Edwin Long

http://www.allartclassic.com/author_biography.php?p_number=86
This was a large painting (68 x 120 inches, oil on canvas) commissioned by Edward Hermon MP. The price was a reputed 1,700 guineas an enormous sum for the time. The subject is from George C. Swayne's The History of Herodatus which includes a description of the marriage auction of the Babylonians.
The painting was an enormous success and gained him an Associateship of the RA. It took two years to paint and notices in the journals of 1875 were ecstatic. Critics agreed on the quality of the colour, its 'spirit and dramatic power'. Large crowds came to see it and Long concentrated on Egyptian scenes after this.
