Victorian Visions - Lady Lever Gallery - Liverpool
['May Day' by JM Cameron © V&A Images / Victoria and Albert Museum]
I spotted this rather late and it finishes on the 16th March.
This stunning exhibition presents over 40 original photographic prints. Recording the Victorian world, its people and places, they provide interesting points of comparison to many of the paintings in the gallery.
All these original prints, from the V&A collection, are highly creative and show experimentation with the relatively new medium of photography.
Photographs by Julia Margaret Cameron echo Pre-Raphaelite painting. Lady Hawarden's haunting images of female sitters can be compared to the 18th and 19th century portraits collected by Lever. The arresting landscapes by BB Turner and Roger Fenton follow in the great tradition of British landscape painting, which is well represented in the collection.

I want to come back and study this more. Any woman who lived before washing machines has my attention and desire to know all the details about how she survived such hard times.
