Arthur Hughes - The Long Engagement
[The Long Engagement] 1853-55 Birmingham Museums & Art Gallery
[Fair Rosamund] 1854 National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne
1832 - 1915.
One of the most talented of the Pre Raphaelite influenced painters, though his skill at painting seems to have declined after about 1870, though he still produced some wonderful illustrations. Of Welsh parentage, his ruddy cheeks earnt him the nickname 'Cherry'. Rossetti said of all his male friends, Hughes was the sweetest and had the most ingenuous nature, the least carking and querulous, and the freest from envy, hatred and malice, and all uncharitableness.
