Honeysuckle - Gerard Chowne 1911

Gerard CHOWNE 1875–1917
Portraitlandscape and flower painter. Born 1 August 1875 in India. Studied at the Slade School 1893–9 and also in Paris and Rome. Exhibited at the N.E.A.C. from 1903; member 1905. Teacher of painting at Liverpool University 1905–8; founder of the Sandon Studios, Liverpool. First one-man exhibition at the Carfax Gallery 1911. Travelled much in Spain and France. Joined the Artists’ Rifles and was commissioned in the 9th East Lancs Regiment. Served with the Salonika Force and died of wounds in Macedonia 2 May 1917. Memorial exhibition at the N.E.A.C. winter exhibition 1917–18.
