John Phillip

1817 - 1867.
Scottish genre painter, sometimes known as 'Spanish' Phillip because of his success with Spanish subjects. Born in Aberdeen. Apprenticed to a local house painter and later to a portrait painter. In 1834 he ran away to London stowed away on a boat and after spending a day at an RA exhibition, determined to become a painter. In 1836 a gift from Lord Panmure enabled him to study.
