William Etty - The Lute Player

oil on panel
painted for Thomas Bodley in 1833
"When soft notes I the sweet lute inspired / Fond fair notes listen'd and my skill admired."
Painted for his friend and though perhaps never fully finished is considered a gem of a painting. Bodley paid a 100 gns for it. A slightly larger and more elaborate version was painted by Etty in 1835 and hangs now in the Tate Gallery.
