probably inspired by Edward Bulwer's The Last Days of Pompeii (1834) and the excavations at Pompeii in the 1860's.
A larger scale version (this is 131/4 x 81/2") was exhibited at the RA in 1865 and is now in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
