since about Victorian times (roughly 1837 on)
Thank you for this fascinating link. I was interested to see the reference to Annie Swynnerton who was a friend of Christiana Herringham, an influential patron of the Arts during the late Victorian period and founder member of the Society of Painters in Tempera. Annie Swynnerton painted Christiana's young sons and I often walk past that painting.
Thanks for that. Where is the painting you walk past ? I hadn't heard of Christina and must look into her.
What a fascinating woman. There is a brilliant book about her on Google Books:http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=dQYVuIuHvg0C&dq=Christiana+Herringham+and+the+Edwardian+Art+Scene&printsec=frontcover&source=bl&ots=YaE9n-9x3W&sig=5CMoUirhfBp-ibzRYCQw9uX9B7w&hl=en&ei=UhADS-TLIsKMjAfYy5W_DA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CAgQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=&f=false
