Edward John Poynter - Faithful unto Death

[the last days of Pompeii]
signed with monogram and dated 1865
oil on panel
13 1/4 x 8.5"

Suggested by the discovery in the excavations at ompeii of the body of a Roman Soldier in full armour.

A slightly smaller copy exhibited at the RA in 1865 is in Liverpool.

This is very moving...After knowing of the horror that took place, that was a very valiant Soldier.
Beautiful painting
and thank you so much for your comment on my post.

You do such interesting posts - must take you hours. If I was this soldier I don't think I would be so dedicated - run.
