Born in New York, Shannon studied at South Kensington under Poynter. He is best known as an extremely successful portraitist, competing successfully with artists such as Sargent and Orpen for the leading commissions. Shannon was known to place a full length mirror behind him so the sitter could chart the progress of their portrait.
