There have been many orientalists who brought photographs back to Europe. The really remarkable thing about this Tour in the East was that it was made in 1862, not 1892. Even better, the photos have been well preserved, curated and reproduced. Francis Bedford was fantastic.

The V&A has some good examples. Those old cameras capture such detail and as you say these are really quite early.
