1833 - 1898.
Painter of domestic and historical scenes, leader of the St John's Wood group. Born in Poitiers and studied in Paris. After 1870 he concentrated on portraits and in 1887 was elected Keeper of the RA. Very popular through his paintings and engravings taken from them.
