William Shayer senior was primarily a landscape and animal painter but he is equally well known for his coastal scenes. A self taught artist, he painted in oils. He was born and lived in Southampton, painted mostly in Hampshire and the New Forest. He was a prolific artist and tended to repeat tried and tested formulae. He became a member of The Society of British Artists in 1829 and took part in that society’s exhibitions between 1825-1870 (338 works). He also exhibited at the Royal Academy 1820-1840 and The British Institution. His work can be seen in The Victoria and Albert Museum and many provincial galleries. He was a successful artist in his own lifetime and his work is widely collected today.
