Myles Birket Foster - The Bird's Nest

One of the most popular watercolour artists who painted sunny, rural scenes populated by children and happy rustic workers. He started his working life as an engraver then illustrated books before painting watercolours. Leaving london in 1861 he settled in Witley, Surrey from where he travelled widely, including Venice where he painted a number of commissioned scenes. He died in Weybridge, Surrey in 1899.
This particular watercolour was exhibited at the RA in 1862 with seven! other watercolours. The Shepherd boy has found a Blackbird's nest but the eggs seem to be from several species - so presumably a collection he has made over some time.
