McCormick was born in Coleraine and went to London on the same ship as Hugh Thomson, the prestigious Victorian artist from Coleraine. He founded the Chelsea Arts Club along with his more famous friend and flatmate artist Frank Brangwyn and was elected Honorary member of the Ulster Arts Club in 1903. His work is popular for his depictions of sailors. The artist is also responsible for the well known version of the sailor’s head on Players cigarettes packaging.

Look at how the officer is sitting. It is always a position of being convinced. I love the action between the characters and the story being told. The people around are curious but keeping their guard and ear turned for any news.

Thanks Anna, you must be so busy. I said to someone yesterday that I love the way these paintings tell a story. I can imagine being there - listening.
