Born at Patricroft, Lancashire and trained at the Harris Institute in Preston and then at the Southport School of Art with John Buxton Knight. Moving to Ilkley he became a leading member of the Wharfedale Group. He was a member of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts and exhibited at the Royal Society of Artists and at the Walker Gallery, Liverpool.

His impressionist technique and rather sombre atmospheric effects influenced numerous Yorkshire artists of his generation.
