William Powell Frith - Life at the Seaside (Ramsgate Sands)

1854
oil on canvas
"My summer holiday of 1851 was spent at Ramsgate. Weary of costume painting, I had determined to try my hand on modern life, with all its drawbacks of unpicturesque dress. The variety of character on Ramsgate Sands attracted me - all sorts and coditions of men and women were to be found there. Pretty groups of ladies ... reading, idling, working and unconciously forming themselves into very paintable compositions."
He returned in 1852 to paint the architecture.
