one of a number of works commissioned by Charles Seely (MP for Lincoln) c. 1870 of Venetian subjects that the artist worked on from 1871 - 1877. This seems to be number 35 of what were believed to be 50. The substantial part of the collection was sold by Christie's in 1966.
