Albert Goodwin - Introduction

1845 - 1932.
Painter in oils and watercolour of landscapes, biblical, allegorical and imaginative subjects. Ardent follower of Turner. First exhibited at the RA in 1860 (aged 15), In the early 1860's was a student of Arthur Hughes and Ford Madox Brown and became friends with Ruskin who took him to Italy in 1872 with Arthur Severn who employed him to copy objects. He travelled widely in Europe, India, Egypt and the South Sea Islands. Was very interested in light and atmosphere in his paintings and experimented with methods of sponging and stippling and was one of the first to use a pen-line in combination with a watercolour wash. Later in his life he worked almost exclusively in watercolour.
