Michael Frederick Halliday - The Blind Basket Maker with his First Child

1856
oil on canvas
An important painting of Halliday's that had disappeared after it was exhibited in 1858 but was offered by Sotheby's in March 1994. He was friends with the Pre-Raphaelite's* and even seems to have done some amateur picture dealing on their behalf. He started exhibiting at the RA in 1853 and in 1855 exhibited his most important picture, The Measure for the Wedding Ring.
In 1856 he exhibited works made during a visit to the front of the Crimean War. He stopped exhibiting about 1866 and died in 1869.
.
*particularly Millais and Holman Hunt.

Its an important painting in my view that has echoes of Millais' more famous The Blind Girl. I was so excited when I found it had been rediscovered. I really do just love this stuff.
