James Holmes - Charing Cross

1832
oil on canvas
The scene (a disputed fare) is set in front of the statue of Charles I with Northumberland House (demolished in 1874) on the right. Most of the northern side of Charing Cross was demolished in the 1830's to build Trafalgar Square and about where Nelson's Column stands now was the well known Golden Cross Inn, the major coaching Inn for the West End for both mail and passengers. David Copperfield stayed there on his way to visit the Peggottys at Yarmouth.
